SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT SYNDROME

What is shoulder impingement?

I've treated a textbook impingement this week in clinic and was just following up with a rehabilitation plan via email, so let's have a look at what it is:

We’ve all heard of it, but let’s look at the details.

Shoulder impingement is when the bicep tendons or the Supraspinatus tendon gets compressed in the sub-acromion space between the head of the humerus and then acromion. This can be under the umbrella terminology of “frozen shoulder” or “a rotator cuff injury”.
(Remember, your rotator cuff is 4 DIFFERENT muscles, not one muscle which a lot of people seem to think.)

Frozen shoulder = the bones, ligaments and tendons that make up your shoulder joint are encased in a capsule of connective tissue, frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, limiting range of movement. Doctors aren’t sure why this happens to some people, although it seems to be more likely to happy to people who have diabetes, women over 40, or people who have mobility issues.

Injury to a rotator cuff muscle = inflammation and swelling to the tendon or tear in the muscle of the shoulder. It can be developed after years of wear and tear, or after a trauma / accident to the area.

Let's talk about returning to physical activity post injury 🦶🏽💪🏽

I have conversations with professional and recreational athletes frequently about 'returning to sport post injury', this could be following surgery or something as simple as a trip on the moor during a recent training run.

The truth is there's no simple answer, yes we are taught guidelines for injury recovery during university training but ultimately there's so many extrinsic factors to consider, It has been suggested that returning to sport should be viewed as a continuum, alongside recovery and rehabilitation. At Flex Sports Therapy we can assess you physically but also look at the full holistic aspect to ensure we can guide you on a return to your chosen sport or lifestyle in the safest way possible often adopting the method of a phased return to physical activity.

At the point of return to sport, physiological healing ought to have occurred. Parameters such as pain, swelling, range of motion, and strength should be assessed, and the athlete should have minimal or no deficits. Having had a previous injury predisposes an athlete to re-injury. This therefore, would mean an injured athlete who returns to competition before sufficient recovery and reconditioning could be at increased risk of injury.
